This year and last DANA members raised more than $4,000 to replant areas of the Fairmount Park rose garden which had been damaged by frost, disease and theft. DANA Treasurer Heather Troxel headed up the project, in which DANA members sold hundreds of $10 rose bush tickets to friends and neighbors.
DANA members with the help of famed Riverside rosarian Eula Moore, chose the varieties and worked with Parkview Nursery to purchase and transported more than 700 bare-root rose bushes to the park.
A group more than 100 volunteers, ages 5-85, consisting of DANA members, Martin Luther King High School students and rosarians planted the roses over the course of two back-to-back weekends.
In May, DANA Chair Chani Beeman accepted the Riverside Neighborhood Spirit Award during the Neighborhood Conference at California Baptist University, in recognition of the group’s contributions.
The rose project also earned the Riverside Downtown Partnership’s Downtown Partners of Distinction and the Riverside City Parks and Recreation Layman Award 2007-8.
